History

The first Third World Studies Workshop was organized on the campus of Governors State University in Chicago's south suburbs. The focus of the first workshop was the "Content and Career Opportunities of African, Asian and Latin American Studies Programs." The goal was to identify active contributions to the general development of the Third World as well as Euro-America. Over the next few years, the workshop's success led to the development of an international conference based in Chicago, Illinois, USA. By 1983, the phenomenal growth of the annual conference led to the establishment of a public, non-profit foundation, guided by a board of directors with international expertise and cross-cultural understanding.

Since 1983, the Foundation has continued to expand upon its tradition of Third World programming and publications developed to provide a unique, independent forum for the discussion and analysis of Third World systems and cultures. The Foundation has evolved into a multifaceted organization which integrates academics, policy makers and other interested populations into a network for understanding the complex problems and future prospects for Third World development. In addition, it has provided an intercultural perspective for translating to Diaspora populations an understanding of cultural commonalties as well as the differences between the host country and the traditional cultures of people of Diaspora.
